Jonathon Heflin
CONTRIBUTER
Jonathan Heflin is an English major at Orange Coast College, with plans to transfer by 2027. He has a pronounced interest in classics and Ancient Greek literature in particular, as well as philology and palaeography across various historical periods. These interests merge with pursuing English at an undergraduate level in that he hopes to study Old and Middle English enough to work with medieval English literature untranslated in the coming years, with a particular emphasis on elegiac poetry and the works of Chaucer. His favorite book presently is Thucydides’s Peloponnesian War, extending to a broader fascination with the proto-Enlightenment carried out by the 5th century sophists, and his favorite poem is “The Ecstasy” by John Donne, a fascinating meditation on the ways in which love engages the religious ascension from the bodily to the spiritual. His favorite movie is currently Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers, a beautifully designed period piece which doubles as a profound study of death, intimacy and solace.
